This 17th-century carved chest is attributed to John Thurston (1607-1685) who emigrated from County Suffolk, England, in 1637 and worked in Dedham and Medfield (Medfield was originally part of Dedham and separated in 1649). He taught John Houghton (1624-1684), maker of the Metcalf Great Chair in DHSM’s collection, the oldest dated American furniture in the nation. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the chest in DHSM’s collection? The chest will be sold at Sotheby’s in New York on January 19th if anyone would consider purchasing it for the DHSM.
